History of the Saranac Laboratory at Saranac Lake, New York

The historic Saranac Laboratory has an amazing history starting from its founder Dr. Edward Livingston Trudeau. He came to Adirondacks with severe health conditions as he was suffering from tuberculosis. He came to Adirondacks in 1873. Here his health gets improved because of fresh and changed mountain climate. He has done repeated attempts to return to New York and after seven years, he went to New York with all his serious health issues.

Because of going back to New York, he has to face drastic bad effects on health. Trudeau has built a winter home in Saranac Lake. He also has founded the Adirondack Cottage Sanitarium to take good care of poor people suffering from tuberculosis. Because of his severe health conditions, he gets motivated for doing so.

On March 24, 1882, Dr. Robert Koch has read his paper in Germany. The name of the paper as "The Etiology of Tuberculosis". In this paper, he has discussed what is the cause of tuberculosis and has given the conclusion that tuberculosis is caused by the identifiable organism. The organism, which causes tuberculosis, is tubercle bacillus. He uses to read medical journals and this made his imaginations more exciting. Reading these journals have motivated him so positively. C. M Lea gave the Christmas gift to the doctor and wrote by hand, "I read every word of it over and over again".

He was inspired by the experiments of Koch so he also tried his best to identify the tubercle bacillus for finding treatment. He gets determined to stain this organism and to watch it in the microscope. He also has spent some of his quality time in Dr. T Mitchell Prudden's laboratory in New York. He has suffered so many difficulties there in working but has struggled so hard for working there until he became able to work alone in the laboratory.

He began to work alone as he finds his own laboratory room in 1885. In the start, he uses to occupy and utilize the eight by twelve foot home office. One of the historians has written that his home was lightened up by kerosene. In cold nights, his house was kept warm by burning woods.  Sometimes he also has to wake up at cold night for adding more fuel to lighten up the room. After some time he has established his room office to a big laboratory by adding more area to it. He has efficiently worked in this laboratory until 1893.

He has done so many exceptional researches related to tuberculosis mostly as he was motivated because of his health conditions. As he once lived in mountain climate and also was working in so much cold weather so has worked on maintaining the constant high temperature in which germs can grow. After his so much efforts and struggle, he became the second experimenter in the country who can grow a pure culture of the tubercle bacillus. He has repeated all the Koch's experiments and they have made new cultures.

Dr.Trudeau has provided land for building a laboratory at Saranac Lake. Hence, the laboratory was built in 1894 at the cost of $ 20,000. This was the first laboratory in the US, which was specially made for research on Tuberculosis. His cousin Aspinwall has helped him in building this laboratory. His house was also replaced and modified by his cousin to make it more advanced. In 1926, more area was added to the laboratory for providing more space to raise experimental animals. This was then reduced in 1970 but the concrete ground can still be seen.
